PREAMBLE:

This was the first session of The A/B Club, and there are things that we are still sorting out, so it's not going to be precise and perfect experiment here, but hopefully an informative one, nonetheless.

PROCEDURE:

For this session we were at John's place, and used Logic 9 on a G5 Mac with SSL converters.  We were monitoring on his Dynaudio BM6A's and his Yamaha NS-10's with a Yamaha Sub Woofer.

We used an acoustic guitar track from an NQ Arbuckle session that John had been working on,  tracked with two AKG 414's into two True Systems Precision 8 preamps, then compressed with two Empirical Labs Distressors on the way in.  The acoustic guitar was a 1958 Gibson J-50.

We took a kick drum from the same NQ Arbuckle session.  It was a 1965 Ludwig, and it was a combination of an Old Neumann U87 and Senheiser 421 both tracked through the API 3124 preamps with no EQ or compression.

The piano we used was a Bosendorfer Grand.  It was recorded with two AKG 414's into two 500 Series Neve 1073LB preamps without any compression or EQ.

The vocal we used was courtesy of Gavin, as he had just tracked it for the same NQ Arbuckle track that we used the kick and acoustic from.  It was tracked with a Shure SM7B through the UA 6176 with some EQing and compression on the way in.

We called up one of these files and had one individual go through and EQ it with each of the EQs, one after the other.  That way we had one person EQing the same sound through the process, and one consistent EQing "goal" to compare the units with.
