James Gates is an inspired musician who captures life`s moments in his growing catalogue of songs.
He was raised in a musical family and has always had a strong passion for guitar. It has been in recent years, through ongoing collaboration with local songwriters, and workshop support from SaskMusic, that his passion for digging deep into lyrics has come out.
On his debut album, Plans, Gates presents a collection of stories that are heartfelt and personal. Teaming with producer Bob Funk, mixer James Bunton (tracks 1-5) and producer/mixer Brad Prosko (tracks 6-8), the songs present a depth of musicianship, melodic hooks, and memorable lyrics. The first single, Follow Through, has Gates’ intimate vocals supported with beautiful harmony vocals, delicate piano and swelling guitars. The title track Plans is a raw look at the balance between hurt and hope, sung over an acoustic guitar and an earthy rhythm section. The album is diverse in layered themes and influence.
James caught some local attention when he joined Serena Ryder on stage at the SaskTel Jazz Festival to sing harmony to Please Baby Please.
